Morocco on the Web

Did you know that there are solar-powered computers communicating via the internet over satellites from the Sahara Desert?

Relating to Morocco, there are 46 sites listed on Yahoo, 43,353 on Excite, 6,047 on Lycos, 1,356 on Webcrawler, and 22,580 on Infoseek.  These sites contain some information about Moroccan life, current events, tourism, history, and other aspects of the country.  Content quantity and quality varies. You might find information from the Moroccan Government, a Moroccan recipe, or activities at the Moroccan pavilion at Disney World.

Some recently observed examples are listed below:

http://www.ift.ulaval.ca/~asma-net/Marrakech.html will take you to Marrakech, with beautiful color graphics and rather thick poetic descriptions of the city. It is available in French. An example is a description of Marrakech, under a photo of the ramparts– Mountains and palm trees in the distance– this description, &quotThe greatest kings fought there...the succeeding dynasties (with their) scholars, artists, architects, painters, and sculptors, from every époque, raised sumptuous palaces, mosques, gardens, medrasas...Marrakech, the imperial city that long ago lent its name to Morocco. It takes a little time to load the entire site because of the very detailed and numerous photographs.

http:/www.unesco.org/whc/exhibits/afr_rev/afric/nf.htm takes you to a site called La Medina de Marrakech. Written in French, it is a brief text and photo view of the city, as part of a much larger geographic study of cities and countries in Africa, put together by UNESCO. It is actually a fair description for so few pages. Included on this site are pretty good maps, information for traveling, phone numbers and addresses for such services as the police or fire departments, transportation possibilities, and much more. It includes some information on current costs or fees.

http://www.weather.com/weather/int/cities/GMMX_Marrakech.html will tell you current weather statistics in Marrakech and give you a three-day forecast. (Other cities in Morocco are, of course, available, but your editor has a prejudice.)

http://www.focusmm.com.au/morocco/mo_map.htm provides a colorful map of Morocco, showing provincial boundaries, major cities, roads, and rivers. Maps of many other countries are available.

http://www.law.cornell.edu/law/mo00000_.html will take you to Cornell University, where you can read the entire Moroccan constitution or, if you want, print out a copy for future bedtime reading. It' really very interesting reading. Did you know that "Morocco is a constitutional, democratic, and social Monarchy"?; and that "Men and Women enjoy equal political rights"? The Constitution and its Preamble are current as of changes in 1992.

http://travelfile.com/htbin will take your to TravelFile Morocco, where you can check out such information as the Hotel La Mamounia home page. Find out facilities available, room types, telephone numbers (this one has an 800 number), and rates.

http://maghreb.net/morocco takes you to Morocco WWW. It is filled with "rooms" and picture galleries...you could make a screen saver or a screen wallpaper with them if you like. The color photos are very good quality and lead to many other bits of information.

http:/www.err.org/Graphics/Photos/Europe/cheesy_morocco_pose_3.gif takes you to a one-photo site, with absolutely no descriptive material, showing a group of four people (some Moroccan and some not) in a rather wealthy Moroccan salon. That's it. Anyone know these people?

Other sites can give you occasional information about Morocco, and only require an occasional check. an example is the USAID site, that provides occasional updates regarding projects in Morocco. The address is http://www. info.usaid. gov. You can search for the information once you are there.
