   Cafe Morocco (Review)
Although hidden in the shadows of a strip mall, this place has plain decor; however, its food is excellent. Traditional staples like hummus, falafel and kabobs complement other specialties that are exotic. A good choice is the Moroccan Tagine (a dish of chicken or lamb with vegetables and spices) or Mujadara (an Egyptian concoction of chicken with rice and lentils mixed with spice and vegetables). For a lunch treat, try a Shawarma, a Mediterranean style burrito.

Chef/owner, Younes Mrani Talbi. The menu is compact only in size, but lacks nothing in the way of variety and adventure. Daily specials can range from Moroccan-style lamb couscous to Italian pasta with a house sauce. The bread that is offered with every meal is baked fresh on the premises and served with a spicy hummus (also homemade). The lunch menu has five sandwiches, the highlights being the Moroccan spicy lamb sausage (served in the same irresistible bread) and the roast beef sandwich (with roasted peppers, onions, blue cheese and a sun-dried tomato paste). For dinner, Florence Café will always stay true to the Italian part of the Mediterranean and offer pastas (like the savory tortellini with goat cheese and a garlic and sun-dried tomato sauce), but the excitement is in the lamb and couscous dishes. Without a doubt, the highlight of the meal will be when you are through-and feel like you can't fit anything else in you-and you try the fresh mint tea, a staple of Moroccan meals. Talbi explains that the tea, made with sugar and crushed fresh mint leaves, is served as a digestitive after every meal in Morocco. "You feel so much better after you have drank some," he adds.

The bar has a French-style draft beer system, one of only a handful in the city, where glasses are rinsed just before serving, to ensure the glass is clean and to improve the head of the beer. Belgian brews like Leffe and Hoegaarden are on offer, and bartenders mix drinks with aplomb. A small plates menu is based around French-influenced North African cooking - favorites include merguez (spicy lamb sausages) and pastilla, a Moroccan dish of spiced chicken tucked inside a puff pastry, while the entrees include plenty of steak and seafood. Upstairs, the small dining area is has been reconfigured as a North African-style lounge, with low chairs and couches, curtains and artworks.

Made with brittle phyllo dough, honey, nuts, rosewater, and fruit, these Persian pastries and cookies delight the eye and palate. Variations on baklava are many—pistachios, walnuts, and pine nuts are among the possibilities. Some are sweetened with honey, others with sugar water; there are diamonds and ruched rolls no wider than a cigar. Kadayif—shredded wheat—is another medium. Trendy chefs use it to coat shrimp and fish, but here it’s fashioned into bundles of honey and nuts or scattered atop a sweet moist cake. There are cookies white with powdered sugar, fragrant with apricots and dates.

L'Olive has moved into fancy new digs (former home of Tagine), which should greatly enhance the Moroccan dining experience that began in humble surroundings on Sheridan Road. Chef-owner Mohamed Ben Mchabcheb makes everyone feel at home, and his food is terrific. The b'steeya (meat pie) is incredible and shouldn't be missed.  Peel-and-eat shrimp are served with harissa, a garlicky hot-pepper sauce. Hummus, presented on a huge platter, is mixed with artichoke hearts and briny olives and sprinkled with goat cheese. Fresh sardines are stuffed with cilantro, onions, tomatoes, and olives. The bulk of the entrees are tagines (stews) and couscous (grain-like pasta). One of the best couscous dishes is made with Merguez sausage, shrimp and lamb. Fans of the previous L'Olive will be happy to know that the new restaurant has a bigger kitchen and the menu will be expanded to include a variety of Moroccan breads and desserts.

This tiny corner shop filled with North African artifacts has only six tables, but serves credible French-Moroccan cuisine; there's a separate vegetarian menu and some 'Moroccan-style' pizzas, although the best bets are the daily specials and traditional Moroccan dishes, which oddly enough come accompanied with American sticky buns.

The first Moroccan restaurant on the East Coast, is tucked away behind South Street on a tiny quiet passageway. Marrakesh is a sensual, exotic adventure where guests lounge on rug covered banquets, surrounded by colorful pillows, in a dimly lit incense-scented room. The evening begins with the hand washing ritual, followed by an authentic Moroccan seven-course feast, and ending with the traditional tea ceremony. Diners indulge in eating with their fingers using pieces of flatbread to scoop up the North African delicacies. Herb infusions of cinnamon, coriander, cumin, mint, and cardamom, along with the sun drenched flavors of almonds, raisins, olives, dates, honey, and fresh fruits from the Mediterranean coast make this restaurant an oasis in the city's south side.
